If your water supply has tested positive for Coliform and or
E. Coli. Bacteria, follow steps 1 through 6 below.
- Determine amount of water to be treated. If well has
a six-inch diameter, it has approximately 1.5 gallons of water per foot. If
well has a six-foot diameter, it has approximately 212 gallons of water per
foot.
- For each 100 gallons of water to be treated, use one
pint of household bleach (5.25 % chlorine) or equivalent product. Double the
amount of the chlorine if the water is not clear.
- Add the appropriate amount of chlorine to the well
and allow it to sit in the well for 2 to 3 hours prior to using any water in
the house
- Then remove aerators from faucets and run ALL
household faucets until chlorine odor is noticed. Turn off water.
- Allow chlorine solution to remain in the well and
the household lines overnight.
- The next morning, run ALL household faucets again
until the odor of chlorine disappears. A slight odor may persist for some
time.
After following all the above steps, wait 10 to 14 days and have the water
tested again to be sure the bacteria is gone before drinking.
